“Grounding” or “earthing” refers to the principle of connecting with the Earth electronically by having direct contact with the ground you walk on. A growing body of research can point towards a number of positive health benefits to this. On today’s blog we explain what grounding is and how it can help.
What is grounding?
Grounding is defined as placing one’s bare feet on the ground whether it be dirt, grass, sand or concrete (especially when humid or wet). When you ground to the electron-enriched earth, an improved balance of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system occurs.
Your immune system functions optimally when it has an adequate supply of electrons, negatively charged particles of atom. Electrons are easily obtained by barefoot contact with the Earth. Research indicates that the Earth’s electrons have antioxidant effects that can protect against inflammation as well as number of other positive health effects.
A review conducted into earthing asked whether electrons can act as antioxidants: “A previous study demonstrated that connecting the human body to the Earth during sleep (earthing) normalises the daily cortisol rhythm and improves sleep.” Writes the review authors.
“A variety of other benefits were reported, including reductions in pain and inflammation. Subsequent studies have confirmed these earlier findings and documented virtually immediate physiologic and clinical effects of grounding or earthing the body.
“The most reasonable hypothesis to explain the beneficial effects of earthing is that a direct earth connection enables both diurnal electrical rhythms and free electrons to flow from the earth to the body.” They concluded.
The modern world prevents grounding
Over time, direct contact with the Earth has waned. We no longer sleep in direct contact with the Earth, we work high up in office buildings and wear synthetic material on our bodies, especially shoes, which are often made from rubber and plastics which block the absorption of electrons.
It is hoped that further research will draw more attention to grounding and highlight its health benefits. It is known that when you provide your body with a constant source of free electrons, through diet or grounding you help to radically reduce inflammation which is widely acknowledged as one of the primary factors contributing to premature aging and chronic disease.
