How to Make Mindfulness Part of Your De-Stressing Routine

More and more people are turning to mindfulness practice as a means to re-connect with themselves. In an age of smart phone and online connectivity almost everything we need is available at the touch of a button, meaning that it’s easy to become detached and allow your life to tick over.

Imagine positive outcomes

Upon waking try making your first thought a positive one, rather than reaching directly for your phone or laptop. This is about connecting with yourself before you connect with the online world. This could be something as simple as saying “Today will be a productive day” or “I will remain positive today, despite the challenges.” By doing this you are re-affirming positive thoughts, rather than allowing negative ones to creep in.

Pay attention to your thoughts

This is where mindfulness can be truly effective because it allows you to take a step back from your thoughts, rather than letting negativity tick over. Instead of avoiding negative thoughts, once you identify them, try figuring out how you can solve them. Not only will this change your mood, but will also create a sense of control when you feel like things are getting on top of you.

Take a walk without your phone

Because we can access information so easily with smart phones and tablets, when we’re without them we feel like we’re missing out. It’s important to try and break this dependency from time-to-time and focus purely on yourself. If you can bear to leave the house or office without your phone, then you can use that time to experience the present moment and really re-connect with your senses.

Help someone every day

Devoting time to helping others has been shown to improve health and wellbeing. This doesn’t mean you have to quite your job to become a volunteer, it could be something as small as complimenting a friend or colleague or helping a homeless person on your way to work. Spreading love helps initiate gratitude, which can also help you lead a longer and happier life.
